Mission

The Queer Crowd is here to support, encourage and facilitate a more diverse and inclusive new form of community on the Central Coast of California. We are dedicated to enriching the lives of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans folk, queerdos and weirdos through fostering a stronger and more visible sense of queer community in San Luis Obispo. We exist to fight for ALL marginalized communities and act as allies to all those negatively affected by a Trump Presidency, including the environment. By hosting regular events, participating in important political causes and organizing to achieve vital space for dialogue, intellectual curiosity, growth and change we hope to make San Luis Obispo a better place.

Queer culture elicits critical thinking and encourages creative approaches to difficult situations. It is our goal to develop and enrich a sense of culture that reflects those whom identify as Queer. Queers have historically energized huge shifts in the cultural landscape, and we think San Luis Obispo could use a little Queering Up! We want to host workshops, Queer Cinema and Music Festivals, Queer Art shows, book clubs, lectures, discussions and Queer Discos! And as our crowd grows we hope to encourage more artists and intellectuals from our sister cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles to find a stomping ground here in SLO county. As much as we hope to contribute, we also want other queers to feel safe and inspired stopping in SLO and sharing their talents and ideas. 

As the Queer Crowd is forming we are guided not only by a desire to develop and preserve a vibrant and vital queer community in SLO but also by the knowledge that we are only as free as the most marginalized and disenfranchised among us. We hope to be an additional voice for those who have been unjustly ignored, belittled, otherized, excluded or criminalized. To this end we will work to end injustice, economic inequality, racism, xenophobia and misogyny et al. 

It is also imperative that we state our espousal and support of The Movement for Black Lives. Here in San Luis Obispo we hope to encourage a stronger recognition of the unequivocally disproportionate amount of violence that the black community faces throughout the country and commit to critical and creative ways of supporting this movement.
